About The Nest Project

I am interested in the ways that humans understand and misunderstand natural systems. I have been exploring this relationship by replicating bird's nests and installing them in outdoor locations. These nests inhabit two worlds. They begin their life in the studio or gallery as art objects and later they are placed in outdoor locations to assume the function of real nests. Here, they are subject to changes in purpose and meaning depending on the reactions of the birds whom they are offered to and other elements in the environment. This blog spot documents the lifecycle or each nest, providing information on its indoor and outdoor life.

The NAG nests

At least 3 of the Nests from the NAG show are remaining. The Finch nest blew down in a wind storm. To my knowledege they have been ignored by birds as per usual... although I did see some house sparrows eye-ing up the one I installed on the building.
I have begun work on a nest for the fox sparrow that now resides in our backyard. To be installed in spring. This bird is awsome by the way. He sings all the time and fights with his reflection in any available mirror - including the side mirrors on our cars. I love him. Doesn't he know its fall?

nesting 2008

Hello anyone who has been following the nest project!
I am finally back online. Nesting season number 2 is coming up fast. This season I will be focusing on cliff swallows! I didn't even know we had them in the area, but apparently a couple showed up at Wild Arc. Next plan of action is therefore to track the suckers down. I really have a place in my heart for swallows in general so it will be exciting to finally see those gourd like nests. I will be making some barn swallows' nests on my house and prepping some more for the show at the Nanaimo Art Gallery.
